Hi Everyone!

Sorry I had failed to send out an October newsletter. Nowadays, it's not easy making time with a newborn and a 3-year-old to watch after. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Volunteers Needed to staff Ride To Work Day booth at
Cycle World Motorcycle Show in Long Beach
The founder of RIDE TO WORK DAY is looking for help to staff a booth at the Cycle World show in Long Beach, December 12-14. If you or someone you know would be interested, please email Andy Goldfine at agoldfine_rtw@ridetowork.org. I'm already going to be busy at the same show, trying to promote our club. Here's a note from Mr. Goldfine...
------------------------------
Hi Morgan,
Advanstar may donate more booths to the RTW Day 04 effort this year (?). Last year we had two. A couple of people I never met organized the booth at the Washington DC show. We sent them all the booth dressings and supplies. They had a blast.

Would you like to find 3 or 4 volunteers to help you pass out RTW propaganda during the show that is out there? I have no idea of the date of the show, but we can send you everything needed on about a one week notice. If the show is two days, it requires about 4 or 5 volunteers to cover the booth for all the hours. One person needs to take the responsibility of signing in, carting the propaganda to the booth (all four file size boxes fit on a single two wheeler), etc..

The reason it is fun is you get to talk casually to lots of people about riding without trying to hard-sell anything. This is a big contrast to most of the other exhibitors, and the persons attending the show really notice and appreciate it. The whole experience leaves one with the wonderful feeling that they did something that mattered. It is so fun it does not feel like work. And it's actually not too much work. I'd sure be grateful for any help (or a committed and responsible referral you might suggest).

Andy

The 20th annual LA-BARSTOW-TO-VEGAS crotch-masochism event is coming up Nov.28-29. Again, I don't know anyone from the club going though. You should be able to find info on this at http://www.district37ama.org.

Street Motorcyclist Earplug Law in California
Governor Davis Signs Law that Removes "Custom" from Earplug Requirement California SB 315 has been signed into law. Included in this bill was a provision to allow for use of "foam" style non-custom earplugs by street motorcycle riders. Thanks are due to State Senator Debra Bowen (Democrat, District 28, Redondo Beach) who worked closely with the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) to make this change in the law. The AMA is asking riders to let Senator Bowen know they appreciate her assistance by sending her an email. The new law takes effect January 1, 2004.
You can attribute any of the following to Senator Debra Bowen (D-Redondo Beach).
If people have questions or want to verify the quote, contact
Evan Goldberg at (916-445-5953) or e-mail him at (evan.goldberg@sen.ca.gov).

"Requiring motorcyclists who want to drown out road noise by using ear plugs to buy custom-made plugs is an outdated law
that makes absolutely no sense. The test ought to be whether a rider using ear plugs can still hear a car's horn or a siren from
an emergency vehicle. If a set of ear plugs can meet that test, then a rider ought to be able to use them, regardless of who
makes them or how they're made. The only people the custom-made requirement helps are, surprise, the people who make
custom ear plugs. It doesn't help riders and it doesn't help the police, emergency vehicle operators, or other drivers who
count on a motorcyclist to be able to hear their horns or sirens. As long as over-the-counter plugs do the job, there's no
reason why ear plugs should have to be custom-made, so junking that requirement is a common sense change that's
long overdue."

The bill was signed on 9/28/03, chaptered on 9/29/03, and will take effect on 1/1/04.
